What is Aromatherapy?

A 100% NATURAL HOLISTIC HEALING TREATMENT USING PURE ESSENTIAL OILS

The term ‘aromatherapy’ refers to a holistic healing treatment using pure essential oils extracted from plants to improve your health and wellbeing and treat a number of ailments. Typically in the practice of aromatherapy, essential oils are diffused into the air and inhaled or absorbed into the skin. The chemicals in essential oils then interact with your body in several ways.

There are more than 90 commonly used essential oils which each have associated health claims. Each essential oil used in the practice has its own unique purpose improving your health mentally, emotionally and physically.

Aromatherapy is becoming increasingly popular as a new way to naturally treat various ailments and is continuously gaining more recognition in the fields of medicine and science, although there is much research still to be done.

How do Aromatherapy Candles Work?

Two of the most commonly accepted theories put forward by researchers to explain how aromatherapy works can be found below:

 Hormones & Enzymes

  1. Essential oil molecules from your candle diffuse into the air
  2. You inhale the molecules allowing them to enter your lungs which quickly absorb them into your blood stream
  3. Once in your blood stream the essential oil molecules can interact with hormones and enzymes in the body impacting both your emotional and physical state

Brain Stimulation

  1. Essential oil molecules from your candle diffuse into the air
  2. Molecules enter your nose and are picked up by olfactory (scent) receptors in the nasal cavity which link to your brains limbic system
  3. Once in the limbic system the essential oil molecules can interact with the brain. Research suggests this may help to control emotions, behaviour and unconscious physiological functions like breathing, heart rate and blood pressure

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are concentrated extracts that capture and retain a plant’s natural scent, flavour or “essence”. They are unique aromatic compounds extracted from plants which each have their own characteristic essence and medicinal benefits.

Essential oils can be obtained using a number of methods but are most commonly extracted through steam distillation or cold pressing. These methods allow for the oils to be extracted at a low temperature ensuring the plant matter is not damaged. For more information on essential oil extraction methods please head to our blog.

Once the essential oils have been extracted in their raw form, they are combined with a carrier oil to create products that are ready for use and that can be found in our aromatherapy candles.

Essential Oils vs Fragrance Oils

Recover only uses the purest of essential oils to fragrance our candles. This is for a number of reasons but primarily because each of the oils in every blend has been selected for its natural medicinal qualities. Fragrance Oils have no medicinal benefits.

A fragrance oil is a synthetic, man-made fragrance which is manufactured in a lab to mimic natural fragrances and create fragrances which cannot be found in nature.
